Creative Desire

Desire: “To long or hope for” “conscious impulse toward something that promises enjoyment or satisfaction in its attainment” (Merriam-Webster)

Creativity: Coming up with novel and useful ideas (Originals, Adam Grant).

Creative desire is the habit of asking “why” and “what if.” Creative desire is the combination of curiosity, discernment, depth, introspection, and generosity. Creative desire is the childlike impulse to play for the sake of play and explore the infinite realm of imagination. When we desire to create, we see opportunities instead of problems in everything. We are aiming our attention at all the ways in which we could “turn this into that” and “use that to do this.” Resourcefulness and daydreaming end up being partners in crime. Desire comes from the neuromodulator dopamine, a molecule driven by the pursuit of more. Creative desire involves the dopaminergic activity that is triggered by pattern recognition. The language and experience of pattern recognition is what allows species to form bonds, stay connected, and pursue meaning. The mindset and habits of creative desire are both essential and in short supply.
